Bike shop near me
"I Had No Idea You Were Here" … And That's Exactly Why I'm Writing This
It happens pretty regularly now. Someone opens the door, takes a look around, and before I can even say hello, they say, "I had no idea you were here. I am so glad I found you.” It makes my day.
When I ask how they found us, the answer is almost always the same: they Googled "bike shop near me" and we showed up. We're a relatively new, independently-owned Trek bicycle shop in Tinley Park, Illinois, and somehow, when someone in Orland Park or Mokena or Frankfort or Lemont goes looking for a local place to buy or service a bike, we're the answer that comes up.
I think about that a lot.
People don't just want a big box store to buy a bike. They want a local shop. A real one. With people in it who actually ride and are genuinely stoked when a bike finds its person (or vice versa ;)).
What I've come to realize is that the Google search is beside the point. What people are really searching for, what they're genuinely relieved to find, is that a local bike shop exists at all. There's something about a neighborhood shop that a big box store just can't replicate. The conversation. The fitting. The joy. Someone who knows the Palos trails or has ridden the Old Plank Trail and can tell you honestly what bike makes sense for where you're actually going to ride it.
That's what people mean when they say they're glad they found us. It's not really about us…. It's about the fact that this kind of place still exists close to home. And once they're in, once we've had that conversation, and once someone leaves with a smile on their face, that’s what this is all about.
So why am I writing this? Partly because I want people to know we're here. If you're in the south suburbs and you've been driving further than you should have to get your bike serviced, or you've been putting off buying one because you didn't know where to go, we're here. Tinley Park. Easy to get to, right across the street from the downtown train station. Free & easy parking, or even better, bike racks right out front.
But mostly I'm writing it because that moment, the "I had no idea you were here" moment, is exactly what keeps us wanting to show up every day. We're a year in and building something. Still earning our place in this community. And every time someone walks through that door surprised and relieved, it's a good reminder that what we're doing matters.
If you haven't made it in yet, come say hi. And if you do, we'll probably ask how you heard about us.
